Though we are familiar with it, do we know what it means and it's origin?
Legal maxims are well established phrases that express traditional legal principles or rules used by lawyers and judges to aid in decision making. Legal maxim, a broad proposition (usually stated in a fixed latin) have been used by lawyers since 17th century or earlier. Some of them can be traced to early Roman law.
Maxims do not have the dogmatic authority of statutes, it formulates a legal policy or ideal that judges are supposed to consider in deciding cases.
