Zero Tap by Magna Ademoroti Sarah Adejoke.
Two taps.
One tap.
Zero tap.
There goes my heart,
Tapping to the rhythm of my lungs.
My eyes twitched,
The birds sang—
Then my heart stopped.
“Why did you stop?”
I asked my heart.
“I can’t die,” I told my lungs.
“Let’s move without the heart.”
So we moved—
In spirit—
Leaving the heart behind.
My body sat numb.
My legs refused to walk.
My hands went on exile.
Oh, but surely—
My mouth wouldn’t betray me.
I tried to speak.
But it had resigned.
They said the heart had stopped.
We must beg it to resume—
Or else,
They’ll all take a vacation
To a country called
Six Feet Under.
